Pakenham Hills Primary School takes its commitment to educational research very seriously. As a part of this commitment, we have committed ourselves to a 3-year global research project: the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning Global Research Project, run by Professor Michael Fullan.
What is New Pedagogies for Deep Learning: A Global Partnership?
New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL) is a global partnership aiming to implement deep learning goals across whole education systems that are enabled by new pedagogies and accelerated by technology.
Global education stakeholders and their business partners will work together to address a key education challenge: How can we mobilise and foster new pedagogies for deep learning in schools and leverage the power of digital technologies?
Through the partnership, students from 10 countries across the globe are engaged in deeper level learning and developing the skills to be lifelong learners, creative, connected and collaborative problem solvers who can successfully participate and innovate in our increasingly interconnected world.

- Who is involved?
What schools are doing? New learning goals require changes in how relationships between students, teachers and families are structured and in how learning is measured. The shift towards active learning partnerships requires students to take greater charge of their own and each other's learning, in and outside of the classroom. It also requires teachers to build capacity for designing and measuring learning that maps curriculum goals to the development of deep learning competencies.
Schools will use the Deep Learning Competencies Framework to understand where deep learning occurs and anchor the design of deep learning tasks. All partnering schools will share consistent assessment approaches and collaborate in identifying and further innovating and scaling the most promising practices and tools that enable deep learning.
Schools will work to:
- Identify a framework for deep learning competencies.
- Provide new measures and tools to review and assess practice and indicate learning progressions.
- Identify, build and share models of new pedagogical practice.
- Implement the precise and deliberate use of digital technologies to accelerate learning.
